The economic scientific literature considers export activity as one of the sources of economic growth of territories, one of the key guidelines for achieving the national goal of “sustainable and dynamic economy” in Russia. The development of export activity is associated with its assessment in the territorial context, identification of trends in the export structure. In turn, the assessment of export activity is based on methodological approaches that differ depending on the consideration of quantitative and qualitative indicators of export. In this regard, the study is aimed at developing and testing a methodological approach to the assessment of export activity of territories, the application of which allows determining the directions of its development in the regional context. The article presents the results of the analysis of Russian and foreign scientific research concerning the allocation of characteristics of export activity, determination of its influence on regional economic development. The paper presents the typology of the RF constituent entities on the basis of the developed approach to the assessment of export activity, based on the results of the analysis of scientific literature and the works of B. Balassa. We present regional specialization in terms of product exports. We analyze export activity in the sectoral and regional context. We developed proposals concerning the directions of export activity of the RF constituent entities. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the development and testing of the approach to the assessment of export activity of territories, which makes it possible to determine the “export profile” of the region. With its help, it is possible to identify the export contribution of each industrial sector and its sectoral orientation in the region, as well as to highlight the priorities for the development of export activities as a source of economic growth of territories. The presented results will be useful for both specialists in the sphere of foreign economic activity and researchers engaged in research in this area
