Creative industries are considered to be one of the most dynamically developing sectors of the world economy. However, their impact on the socio-economic development of Russian regions remains insufficiently studied. Our research is aimed at determining the contribution of creative industries in the economic development of the subjects of the Northwestern Federal District of Russia. The study uses the method of estimating the value of creative product made in regional economic systems, based on the existing approaches, on the basis of which the share of creative industries in the GRP structure of the subjects under study was determined. In addition, we have identified a list of factors that influence the development of regional creative industries. Among them are the territorial location of the region, its natural and climatic conditions, the presence of tourist and historical and cultural potential, as well as the interest of the authorities. The research subjects were grouped according to the level of creative industries development based on the results obtained. The leading regions are Saint Petersburg, the Kaliningrad and Vologda regions, the regions with an average level of creative industries development are the Murmansk, Pskov and Arkhangelsk regions, the list of regions-outsiders includes the Leningrad and Novgorod regions, as well as the Republics of Karelia and Komi. We have developed proposals for the authorities aimed at the development of creative industries in relation to each of the identified groups. The findings can be useful for researchers and graduate students analyzing the issues discussed in the text, authorities at various levels, as well as serve as a basis for future research. The elements of the scientific novelty have the development of a methodological approach to assessing the contribution of creative industries to the region’s economy on the basis of determining the value of the creative product and identifying factors that influence this value. Among the prospects of the research are the issues of determining the creative product structure in different regions of the Northwestern Federal District and the development of more detailed proposals aimed at the development of creative industries within the framework of the authorities’ policy
