The article presents an analysis of the transformation of the gender and age structure of the Sverdlovsk Oblast population as a whole and in the context of municipalities for the period 2012–2020. The relevance of the study is due to the need for scientific understanding of dynamics in the gender and age structure from the perspective of strengthening population aging process and its socio-economic consequences for the region. The scientific problem lies in the insufficient knowledge of the elements of the transformation of the gender and age structure in the context of municipalities, which hinders the effective implementation of demographic policy at the regional level. The purpose of the article is to develop a typology of the regional municipalities based on the dynamics of indicators that determine the transformation process of the gender and age structure, and to establish the speed of this transformation. We have used the following methods: logical, generalization method, systematic approach, typologization. The paper uses statistical grouping and calculation of indicators characterizing dynamics in the gender and age structure as research tools. Graphical and tabular techniques are used to visualize the data. The result of the study is the proposed typology of population age structure of the Sverdlovsk Oblast municipalities. We have made conclusion about the intensification of aging processes of the regional population, about the presence of significant disproportions in the age structure, the influence of socio-economic features of each territory on the aging process. The scientific significance of the research results lies in the development of methodological and methodical tools that allow assessing the transformation of the regional gender and age structure in the context of municipalities The practical significance lies in the development of a scientific basis to implement effective management decisions in order to smooth out age disparities in the region and the formation of optimal age structure as the basis for the future socio-economic development of the region. The prospects for developing the research topic is to improve the proposed methodology and the expansion of polygons for its testing
