The effects of population ageing are reflected in many sectors of public life. Given the global nature and irreversibility of this phenomenon, as well as the fact that most developed and developing countries have completed the phase of demographic dividend, the labor potential of the older generation is becoming one of the main resources for sustaining the socio-economic development of ageing states. At the same time, many barriers to its effective implementation remain relevant. This is largely determined by the characteristics of the socio-demographic group of elderly people, as well as by institutional factors. In order to determine the possible areas of increasing the efficiency of labor potential realization of the older generation research into the factors and trends in changes in the activities of the elderly on the labor market is becoming more relevant. The purpose of the paper is to identify and study the current trends reflecting the changes in the labor activity of the older generation amid population ageing. The first part presents the results of analysis of global trends in transformation of components of labor activity of the older generation, as well as the situation of the elderly people in the labor market in Russia. The second part is devoted to the in-depth analysis of labor activity of people of pre-retirement and retirement age according to the sociological survey “Quality of Life of Elderly People in the Vologda Oblast” (2015–2018). Data of the sociological survey suggest that the concentration of the employed of older ages is gradually shifting towards people of pre-retirement and younger retirement age. Significant changes in the structure of motivation (growing importance of non-economic motives) take place. It can be stated that the role and importance of elderly people in the socio-economic development is currently increasing; this is reflected in the fact that the representatives of the older generation become aware of their growing importance for the society
