The article is an overview of the main stages of formation of the journal “Problems of Territory’s Development” in the context of the 25th anniversary of the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of RAS. The necessity of establishment of the journal in 1997 is substantiated. It is noted that throughout its 18-year history the journal has fulfilled and continues to fulfil an important function in the dissemination of scientific knowledge in a broad range of issues related to socio-economic development of territories. In order to systematize the information about the development of the journal, and its role in the formation of the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of RAS three stages of its development were identified: the initial period of its formation (1997 – 1998), the period of search for its own development path (1999 – 2009), the period of improvement (2010 – present). The basis of this periodization is a set of criteria of substantial and formal characteristics of the journal. The article contains key events in the life of the Institute, as reflected in the pages of the journal “Problems of Territory’s Development” at each stage of its formation (10th and 15th anniversary of the only Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Vologda Oblast; first contests of research works in Economics; creation of the Research-and-Education Center under ISEDT RAS; a visiting session of the Academic Council of the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute of RAS, in Vologda; organization and hosting of the Russian reseach-to-practice conference “Children and youth – the future of Russia”, etc.). The article shows the changes in printing characteristics of the publication in dynamics of its development, and the subject of published scientific articles. The author gives a brief description of the current state of the journal. It is noted that, as of the first half of 2015, the journal is compliant with the majority of international quality standards that foreign databases set in relation to scientific periodicals. In general, the journal’s role in the activities of the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of RAS in dissemination of research findings, in establishment of a regional platform for discussion of topical socio-economic issue and development of science-based solutions to these problems
